Welcome to Cub Scouts Pack 344! The pack hopes the information and guidelines presented to you in the next few pages will help you get off to a good start for the coming year. Please keep this packet as a handy reference regarding pack policy and uniform information.
Pack 344, as part of the Duck Creek District that covers Garland ISD, also is included in Circle Ten Council, which encompasses 24 counties in northeast Texas and southeast Oklahoma. Our pack serves Abbett, Hickman, Lister, Luna, and Spring Creek Elementary Schools, as well as any outside scouts in the appropriate age ranges for our dens. The pack is composed of grade-level dens with numerals assigned by either the cub master or pack chairman. Kindergartners are Lions; first graders are Tigers; second graders are Wolves; third graders are Bears; and fourth graders are Webelos, and fifth graders are Arrow of Light. All pack members are part of Cub Scouts, the Scouting America program for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America).
All BSA units have a chartered organization which acts as a “sponsor.” Pack 344’s chartering organization is the PTA of the Luke & Betty Abbett Elementary School located at 730 W. Muirfield Rd., Garland, TX 75044. The PTA assigns a chartered organization representative to interface with the unit.
The pack is managed by registered BSA Leaders coordinated by the pack committee chairman. Other committee members include secretary, treasurer, event coordinators, awards coordinator, new member coordinator, and others. All pack parents are encouraged to attend the committee meetings.
The other key leader in the pack is the cub master who oversees youth interaction. This individual leads the pack events including monthly pack meetings, special events such as Pinewood Derby and Rain Gutter Regatta, and campfire activities. The cubmaster interfaces with the den leaders and works closely with the chairman to assure that each Scout receives a quality experience.
Den meetings are coordinated by the den leader with parental input at the time and location of the leaders’ choosing. Pack 344’s meetings (all scouts) are usually 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. the second Thursday of every month at Luke & Betty Abbett Elementary School Cafeteria.
